The private sector’s role in Universal Health Coverage in India

Given the weakness of existing public health infrastructure in India, the private sector will have to play a key role if India hopes to achieve Universal Health Coverage.

While there have been several successful examples of the government and private sector working together, many of these Public Private Partnerships have failed to live up to their potential as a result of mismanagement by the government partner.

In particular, private sector partners are often not given the freedom to plan and manage without undue political interference.
